about

'Tokyo Layers Alive' is Extreme Sound Detective’s first release.

This soundscape reports the consummation of a human ghost by the hyper ghost of a megalopolis.

You must understand the term “ghost” as in Gilbert Ryle expression “Ghost in the Machine” from 'The Concept of Mind', later expanded by Arthur Koestler and Masamune Shirow.

The album is the result of the interactions between four layers. Each one has its own desire and purpose.

The first one is the representation of the wanderer came to Tokyo to lose himself. Nonetheless, he is unaware of the real meaning of his journey. It contains the physical and spiritual aspects of the protagonist. And in the space-time continuum, it is located in the present.

The Second one is the images that will lead the wanderer through the city, memories that called him, questions he always asked himself. This layer also deals with the past, of which palimpsests are still reachable with the training of the conscience. It contains the evocation of Japanese writer, directors, musicians, visual artists, etc.

The third one is the sounds of Tokyo’s occupation produced by the human/machine correlation. The usage and the enjoyment of the city produce a high level of sounds. This layer is so linked with the super-exploitation of materiality that it has no relation with time, days and nights intertwine with the help of thousands of artificial suns.

The fourth one is Tokyo herself, absolutely alive. Since the Edo period, and even before when Tokyo was a small fishermen village, the intellectual temperature of this area increased in parallel with the population growth, as in the theory of Paul Valéry. In modern Tokyo, the noosphere became so dense that it finally reached the omega point described in 'Le Phénomène humain' by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin: a new ghost was born. This layer is absolute, and by consequence, timeless.

To quote Aristotle, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The synergy between the layers reaches a meaning beyond each one. The result resonates with the 'Bardo Thodol', scriptures: the liberation of the ghost through hearing during the intermediate states. The cyclic sounds reflect the recurrent prayers repeated to help the transfiguration of the ghost.
