about

'Dead And Palimpsest' is Extreme Sound Detective’s sixth release.

Paracelsus, born Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim, is the nodal icon of the tentacular references backing this compilation of seemingly independent tracks.

He lengthy wrote about a multiple of subjects in the way that can remind the anterior tradition as the 'Torah' or Hesiod’s 'Theogony' and 'Works and Days' among others. They all approach the different levels of life that need to be explained and ruled. Paracelsus treated about theology, philosophy, medicine, nature, alchemy, etc. Every plane of actions has the same importance in the greater design that is the human being and his celestial environment.

Paracelsus was a wandering doctor and an errant prophet. He saw the faith and the relationship with god as an individual matter. Again this view reminds Jewish learnings that are developed in the book 'The Thirteen Petalled Rose' by Adin Steinsaltz. His critics against the stones and the power of the ecclesiastical church echo some of Luther’s 'Ninety-five Theses'. The hypocrisy that he witnessed travels through time up to Léon Bloy. His most radical testimony is 'La Désespéré', that drastic and surgical book also expelled him from the French secular society.

He is also a pivotal figure between Middle-Ages and Renaissance. Paracelsus observed the ruins of an era and among others participated to eschew Galenism. He was also completely aware of his time so a parallel can be done between his outlook and the biblical idiom “The Blind Leading the Bling”. Pieter Bruegel the Elder painted this allegory, 'De Parabel der Blinden', with highly clinical details about eye diseases. And years after, in the same area, also dealing with composition and perception of the past, present, and future, Peter Buggenhout used the same reference for his sculptures. These sculptures mirror the same consciousness as Paracelsus of a civilization raised on debris and erecting junks.

This album presents glimpses of this focal character. It proposes a metaphor for Paracelsus: a tree with deep roots in many cultures and knowledge, and with wide branches with ramifications beyond the limits of time and space.
